Where is Gaula located?

Gaula is a small parish in the municipality of Santa Cruz, one of the oldest settlements on the island. The parish has about 4,028 inhabitants and an area of 6.95 km². It is located 7 kilometres northeast of the island's capital Funchal.

Currently, the municipality of Santa Cruz has about 43,000 inhabitants divided into five parishes: Camacha, Caniço, Gaula, Santo António da Serra and Santa Cruz.

You can have breakfast from 08.00 to 11.00 am.

If you want to have breakfast earlier or take something with you because of an early hike or an early start, please let us know and we will prepare it for you.

What can we expect from breakfast?

At Casa do Mundo, we make every effort to offer our guests the best available on the island. You will also experience this in the varied breakfast. Deliciously fresh, combined with regional and homemade products.

Everything is prepared with love: pure flavours, fresh cheeses and charcuterie. Vegan or vegetarian adaptations are possible as well as for those with allergies and intolerances or special requests. However, we would ask you to indicate clearly in advance so that we can arrange this for you.

Should your request not be achievable for us, we hope for your understanding, but we will of course be more than willing to see what we can do for you.

Question 5

Can we have a drink/food during the day or in the evening?

Accepted Answer

Yes! On the ground floor near the breakfast room, you can find our "honesty bar" for our guests. You take something to drink or a snack of your choice and write it down on the form right away. This will be put on a separate bill per room. You can pay at check-out. Right, we rely on your honesty!

Coffee and tea is for free and we make sure there are bottles of water (free max 2 per day) in the room.

What about the accessibility of Casa do Mundo?

Casa do Mundo was originally a "normal" family home and is not equipped with an elevator but does have a number of stairs, to, for example, the front door, the first floor where the guest rooms are located and stairs down to the garden. As a result, our casa is unfortunately not suitable for people with mobility problems, wheelchairs or other physical limitations.

Is there Wi-Fi available?

Yes! After hiking, you can also surf for free!

There is WIFI everywhere in the casa, so you can check your mail or post pictures of your picture perfect holiday on the web!

Is it easy to park at Casa do Mundo?

Accepted Answer

You can park behind the electric gate, max 3 (small) cars and outside the gate on the public road can also be parked for free. So parking is not a problem.

Liability

Casa do Mundo cannot be held liable for theft or damage or loss of items that have occurred in or around the Casa. You always remain responsible for your own belongings. All guest rooms are equipped with a spacious (laptop) safe where you can store your valuables.

The most beautiful hikes in Madeira!

Vereda do Pico do Arieiro - PR1

We start with one of the most beautiful and impressive walks in all of Madeira! But it is also one of the most tiring hikes on this beautiful island. This is because this walk connects two of the highest peaks on the island : the Pico do Arieiro (1818m) and the Pico Ruivo (1862m).

Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço - PR8

Located on the eastern part of the island, this hiking trail offers incredible panoramic views! During the hike, you actually walk along the entire peninsula.

Levada das 25 Fontes - PR6

This is one of the most popular levada walks on Madeira and it is often combined with the Levada do Risco (PR6.1). This walk owes its name to the many small waterfalls and springs you encounter along the way and at the end of the route.

Levada do Risco - PR6.1

This levada is often combined with the Levada das 25 Fontes.To reach the starting point, just walk back from the PR6 until you reach the crossroads again.Here you will see another arrow pointing to PR6.1. The footpath is wider here than on the PR6, so if you want to combine both walks, I recommend starting with the PR6 and then doing the PR6.1 before returning to the car park.

This is one of the most beautiful walks on Madeira and leads you through the magical Laurisilva forest.Fanal is a favourite part of the whole island and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Vereda Do Larano - Madeira's most beautiful coastal path

The Vereda do Larano is one of the most beautiful hiking trails on Madeira. This point-to-point walk takes you from Machico to the coastal town of Porto da Cruz and back. And meanwhile, you can enjoy the most epic views of Madeira's rugged coastline.

Levada do Caldeirão Verde - PR9 - The most beautiful levada walk on Madeira

Above all, the huge variety during the trail in nature is fantastic. If you only have time to do one levada, this one is highly recommended! The Levada do Caldeirão Verde takes you through Madeira's lush jungle, past several waterfalls and even lets you walk through tunnels!

Caldeirão do Inferno hike

The Caldeirão do Inferno is actually an extension of the Levada do Caldeirão Verde.

By completing this trail, you get to see a few more spectacular waterfalls and walk through a crazy gorge.You will definitely not regret this!

Hike from Levada do Moinho to Levada Nova

The waterfall hike from Levada do Moinho to Levada Nova is a favourite of many. Not only do you stand face to face with one of Madeira's most beautiful waterfalls.But you also walk through a beautiful valley the whole time. Vereda do Pico Ruivo - PR1.2

The Vereda do Pico Ruivo is the shortest and fastest way to reach Madeira's highest peak, the Pico Ruivo. The hike starts at the Achada do Teixeira car park and in about 1 hour you'll be at the top of the island. Oh, and the views you encounter on the way are truly breathtakingly beautiful!

Bica Di Cana Viewpoint Hike - One of the most beautiful viewpoints on Madeira

It may sound strange, but the Bica Di Cana viewpoint is one of the most underrated vantage points on the whole island of Madeira.

On a clear day, you have views over the St Vicente Valley and can see both Pico Ruivo and Pico Areeiro!

And want to know the best? It's super easy to reach this viewpoint, as it's one of the shortest walks on the whole island!

Pico Ruivo do Paul viewpoint hike

The Pico Ruivo do Paul viewpoint hike is located on the beautiful Paul da Serra plateau.Located on the western side of Madeira, the Paul da Serra plateau is covered in yellow and orange flowers in spring. Driving through this beautiful landscape, you will not only see a few wind turbines, but also a small hill covered with these yellow flowers. This is where you will find the viewpoint Pico Ruivo do Paul.

Proximity of airport.

Madeira's Christiano Ronaldo Airport is about 10 car minutes from the casa.

If you wish, you can use our free shuttle service. We will pick you up and/or drop you off. A hire car can also be dropped off at our casa.

From the balconies of all rooms and from the covered veranda, you can see the runway in the distance. The planes make a turn and fly past the casa to land. The noise is minimal and lasts a few seconds. Inside, you won't hear the planes.

If you like plane spotting, you've definitely come to the right place. It can sometimes be very spectacular because of the wind. But rest assured, the pilots have had special training when they are allowed to fly at all on Madeira.

Are there any beaches nearby?

The cosy village of Santa Cruz is a few minutes from the Casa. You can go to Palmeiras Beach here and have a nice lunch at the bakery opposite the beach or at other restaurants a little further in the village.
